Overview: Resilient wastewater treatment using innovative biotechnologies, surface water quality, environmental sustainability using microbial ecology in engineered bioreactors and natural ecosystems, virology with a specific focus on bacteriophages, food sustainability through agricultural sustainability, management of emerging pollutants (PFAS), the nitrogen cycle in engineered and natural ecosystems, and bioinformatics and big data. Nearly $5.5 million in research projects ongoing. More than 100 research articles (ES&T, Water Research, Nature Communications, Chemosphere, Bioresource Technology, Scientific Reports, J of Hazardous Materials, Environmental Pollution, and more) and more than 200 conference papers/presentations. I am an NSF CAREER (2011) awardee for my breakthrough research on bacteriophages in engineered bioreactors. In my nearly 19-year career at the University of Utah, which began with an assistant professorship in 2006 and progressed through tenure and a full professorship, I have graduated 20 doctoral and 19 master’s students. In addition to many graduate students, I have contributed to the dreams of several undergraduate and high school students by engaging them in laboratory research and promoting them to science fairs and conferences.
